Bronze Medal!
WAY TO GO ANDY!
Congratulations to Andy Glendinning on winning a bronze medal at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Charlottetown, PEI! Andy was awarded the bronze for his work on engineering an assistive device to help open jars.
Canada Wide Science Fair 2012
Andy Glendinning and Mr. Hodgson have made it safely to the National Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF) in Charlottetown PEI. Their plane landed safely on Saturday morning (May 12th) after a quick 2 hour flight. Their plane was the smaller one on the right in the photo. (Yes, the smaller one!) With only 48 seats on board and no head room, Mr. Hodgson was glad to get out after bumping his head repeatedly on the ceiling and overhead compartments.
Andy is very excited to be able to represent not only Waverly PS, but also the region of Durham at this year's CWSF. His innovative project where he designed and built a "Better Gripper" for disabled and elderly people to open jars is going up against 500 other finalists from across Canada for awards totalling over one million dollars! Andy's weeked has been spent getting to know people from across Canada and setting up his project. Public visits and judging begins on Monday.
Mr. Boucher and Mr. Hodgson wish Andy the best of luck as he works throughout this week at the CWSF. It looks to be the trip of a lifetime!

MATS FOR HAITI Last year there was a devastating hurricane in Haiti. One of our students, Emily Jenkinson, is working with other leadership students and St. Leo’s church to collect the OUTER milk bag (the one with the colour printing on it) to make sleeping mats for the people in northwest Haiti. This region of Haiti is the poorest the country. Many homes are made of woven leaves or cardboard. Leaves are also woven into bed mats, but following tropical storms these mats do not dry out. Biting insects and poisonous spiders find homes in this bedding. Insects do not like plastic. Plastic woven mats can be hung to dry and washed easily…… Wondering how you can help? Please collect the outer bag that holds your milk bags and send them to the school to be turned into sleeping mats. We are also doing our piece for the planet by reusing something that would otherwise go to landfill. We will collect until Friday, May 18th. If you would like more information go to http://www.nwhcm.ca/mats4haiti.htm.
